Ocean Voyages in Folding Kayaks

Hannes Lindemanns 1956-57 solo transatlantic voyage in a folding kayak is justifiably famous among kayak fans. (In our previous post we wrote about Lindemanns lesser-known adventure, in which he crossed the Atlantic solo in a dugout canoe just one year earlier.) Well get to it shortly, but whats more surprising than that someone can traverse an ocean in a folding kayak is that it had been done twice previously, also by Germans, in trips equally if not more impressive.

Franz Romer in Deutscher Sport. Source: ExpeditionKayak.com
(Click any image to enlarge)
The first such voyage was in 1928, when Franz Romer did it in Deutscher Sport, a 216" Klepper outfitted with a squaresail rig. Romer sailed almost 4,000 miles, from Lisbon to Puerto Rico, via the Canary Islands, in 58 days. In San Juan he fitted his kayak with an outboard engine before setting sail again. His next destination: New York. Unfortunately, he sailed into a hurricane and was lost without a trace. It has been speculated that the engine upset his kayaks natural balance and seaworthiness, and that he might have survived the storm without it. (Some sources give St. Thomas as the end of his trip. On this matter, Im relying on an account of Romers voyage in Lindemanns book.]

Oskar Speck in his Pionier Faltboot. (Source)
In 1932, Oskar Speck, a failed electrical contractor, launched his Pionier Faltbootwerft-brand folding kayak on the Danube River in Ulm, intending to sail to Cyprus, where he hoped to get work in a copper mine. When he reached Cyprus, however, he decided to go further. A lot further, as in, Australia. He shipped the boat, along with its jib-headed, boomed-lug rig, to the upper reaches of the Euphrates River, sailed downstream to and through the Persian Gulf, along the coasts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, and down the western coast of the southeast Asian peninsula. From thence, he passed through Malaysia and Indonesia and along the north coast of New Guinea, finally reaching Australia shortly after it had entered the Second World War. Speck, who proudly displayed a Nazi swastika on his jib but was unaware of the current political situation, was politely but promptly arrested, and he spent the rest of the war in an Australian prison camp.

Pionier replaced Specks boat four times during the 31,000-mile voyages seven year duration. Unlike Romers and (later,) Lindemanns, Specks voyage was mainly alongshore. He spent most nights on dry land, often had access to fresh food and good hospitality, and was able to take as many "down" days as he wanted. This in no way minimizes the scale of his accomplishment, and he is still, to the best of my knowledge, the only person to kayak the entire length of the Indian Ocean.

Hannes Lindemanns Atlantic crossing in a Klepper was apparently the last transoceanic voyage in a folding kayak, although there have been a number of crossings made in hardshell kayaks since that time. Lindemann was already contemplating a voyage in a folding kayak when he returned to Europe in April, 1956, following his dugout crossing. But where Lindemanns first voyage was meant to test Alain Bombards theory that man could survive in a shipwreck scenario by drinking seawater, this time the crackpot notion upon which his voyage rested would be his own. He wrote:
"It was not until I learned something of voodoo in Haiti [at the end of his previous voyage] that I began to give really serious consideration to my new plan. Through voodoo I learned that one can, by deep concentration, a kind of self-hypnosis, change ones fundamental attitude toward a problem, that, ultimately through voodoo, one can rid oneself of fears and doubts. Impossible is not Haitian, runs the motto of the newspaper in Jacmel…and this motto I took for my own."
Convinced that morale was a more important problem than physical skill or endurance, and fully expecting to suffer, Lindemann schooled himself in mind-control techniques, and took "never give up," "keep going west," and "dont take any assistance" as his mottos. He also attempted to acclimate himself to sleep deprivation, and relied on prayer during the voyage.

Hannes Lindemann in his Klepper Aerius II, Liberia, flying two squaresails and gaff main. (Source: Time/Life)
As on his third and successful attempt in the dugout canoe, Lindemanns kayak voyage departed from Las Palmas, in the Canaries. He had outfitted his 17-foot, Klepper Aerius II two-seater kayak (named Liberia, like his dugout) as a ketch, with squaresails on both main and mizzen masts (1.5 and .75 square yards respectively), and a larger, high-peaked gaff mainsail as well. The mizzen mast was "a paddle that sat on the aft washboard," and the steering cables could be actuated by either hand or foot. An outrigger consisted of a float made from a section of truck inner tube lashed to another paddle that served as the outriggers single boom. As with his first dugout attempt, Lindemann set sail without a shakedown voyage. Finding the boat overloaded, he soon tossed a quantity of provisions, so that he ended up carrying 154 lb. of food and drink.

Although the outrigger boom was broken in a collision with a pilot boat as he was leaving Las Palmas, Lindemann soon fixed it and it held up throughout the rest of the voyage. Given the prevailing winds, the outrigger was on the lee side of the vessel for most of the voyage, and Lindemann occasionally wished for a second outrigger to lend greater stability to the boat. Even so, when he capsized twice in a Force 8 storm near the end of his voyage, it was over the outrigger float both times.

Lindemann arrived in St. Martin in January, 1957, having found the 72-day crossing no less an excruciating trial than he expected. Although he attributed his success, in part, to the Voodoo-inspired program of affirmations and mind control, it should be noted that he had succeeded on his previous voyage without those aids.

Of historys three ocean-spanning folding-kayak voyages, Lindemanns is the best known. No doubt this was partly because he wrote a book about his adventure, but also because his movie-star good looks landed him on the cover of Life magazine.

Update on Design 2678 46 Sloop

We received a nice note from the owner of the 46 sloop built at Walsteds. He and his family have cruised north of the Artic Circle this summer. Heres a nice shot of the boat in a small fishing village in Norway. I note he has replaced the furling boom with a Park Avenue style carbon boom. Please also see my posting dated August 1.

Skomer Island

Myself and Elan made a trip west with the promise of some fine weather.  We left a car at Dale with the intention of paddling out from St Brides Haven, around Skomer and Skokholm, cross over to St Anns Head and into Milford Haven to land at Dale.
Ready to launch at St Brides Haven.  We made a beeline straight down onto Skomer Islands north coast hoping to catch the last of the southerly flow that would take us down the west side of Skomer and onto Skokholm.
Grey Seal
Skomer Island is a wildlife haven and within minutes we were surrounded by many of its residents.

 Puffins

 Porpoise
On Skomers western point we enjoyed a close encounter with a pod of Porpoise.

We explore the rugged western approaches of the island but it soon becomes apparent that the low wind forecast was not entirely correct.  A stiff wind blew up from the south meaning if we wanted to carry on with the intended plan it would be a battle into the head wind all the way.
The wind on tide made for some interesting conditions in Little Sound where we decided to make a break against the flow back onto the sheltered northern side of the island.
Original plan aborted we decided to take a relaxing paddle back along the old red sandstone cliffs to St Brides Haven with a lunch stop at Martins Haven.
Conditions couldnt have been more different as we weaved in and out of the kelp covered boulder fields admiring the beauty of our home coastline.

Not the intended route today but the close encounter with the pod of porpoise easily made up for it.

Spira International 27 Foot Boat Plans Build Costs

This will be my first keel up boat build.Well, unless you count the single person knock together boats I have built.I have rebuilt and restored a number of boats by myself and with friends.I even held a job doing interiors and upholstery in boats.

The one main factor is the cost of building the hull and cabin.I will layout the cost to build the 27 foot trailerable Spira International boats.I am using the bill of materials(BOM) off of the study plans that are available on the Spira International website. Its good to be able to get an idea of what costs are involved before building. Most other designers require you to purchase a study plan to get an idea of whats involved to build their design. You may still be required to buy the full plan set to get the BOM.This is a bad business practice in my mind. With the BOMs in hand,I started getting the numbers together and adding up cost.I will layout the cost break down and then give some ideas on how to cut some costs.I will start laying out things and end with the boat I have chosen as the design I plan to build.

The Elements of Boat Strength

Suppliers for pricing are as follow.
Lowes Wood supplies.
Home Depot Wood supplies.
Raka Epoxy and fiberglass.
Fastenal Screws and bolts.
McMaster Carr Screws and bolts.
DuckworksBBS Duckworks carries some of the odd size screws called for in the plans.

Avoid treated woods as much as possible.Treated wood usually contains traces of copper which corrodes fasteners and any other metals that come in contact with it.Even painted it can still leech copper. Also, copper is bad for the marine environment and is illegal to use in bottom coatings in some areas.

I prefer A/B fir plywood but will accept A/C fir,if its good quality.Avoid plywood with voids and footballs if possible.

I only use stainless steel fasteners for the extra corrosion resistance. Most of them will be sealed in with epoxy.I only use Raka epoxy kits with non blush hardener.

50 inch width is considered standard width for fiberglass boat cloth.Try to purchase all of your fiberglass cloth at one time.It saves a lot of money.

Newfie. Some may notice that I didnt include Newfie.I really like that boat, but it has a very small interior and there was no BOM on the study plans.

Boat Building Manual

There are some ways to cutting material costs.I added a few above.

Lumber.Find a local saw mill and have the lumber cut to full boat length. You could also use trees from your property.Make a deal to get your lumber ordered filled and let the mill have the rest to sell as payment. This can be tricky as some saw mills are mobile while others require you to haul your wood to the mill. This option takes longer and requires a place to store the wood while it finishes drying out.The best option for most people will be finding a local builders supply. They get huge loads of lumber with a volume discount. If you buy enough, they sometimes will negotiate for  lower price. Also, there wood tends to be better quality than most places like Lowes and Home Depot.

Fasteners.I recommend finding a local supplier and purchasing everything at once plus 10% to build the hull and/or cabin.Later when you need fasteners and hardware to finish out the boat, you can possibly negotiate for a slight discount on pricing.Hey,every little bit helps.

Epoxy. Some epoxy manufactures set a shelf life for their products some do not.I have had epoxy either, go bad, or it was a bad batch.Which,I am not sure.Epoxy is heavy and can get expensive.Try to buy in bulk to save on cost and shipping. Its best if you can find a dealer or supplier.Be careful tho.Their mark up may be a lot higher than ordering a kit.Shop around.I like Raka because they have an easy mixing system.

PL glues.I have had bad experiences with these, so I stay away from them.My main gripe is the ability for PL and epoxy to stick together.I built a knock together plywood boat and when I sheathed it in fiberglass and epoxy, the area around the PL let go.I wont knock PL glues, but theyre not for me when boat building.

My next installment will include more ways to cut cost during fit out and finishing.

Modifying Tools 1 Fein Multi Master

Much of the time I make use of hand tools - not because they are quaint or traditional, but because they work fast, predictably, and quietly.

Using a spokeshave on during the construction of a Francois Viver Aber. I was not aware that my wife was taking this photo  as I was concentrating on my work, so you can be assured that the photo was unposed.
Despite my preference for hand tools, it is obvious that for certain jobs power tools allow one to get a lot more work done in a given time, and so where there is a real advantage I have no inhibitiions about picking up an electric or a pneumatic tool. Some become real favourites, and close to the top of my list is the Fein Multi Master.

I have three of these tools - two are mains powered electric versions and one (not a Fein, but identical in operating principle) is a pneumatic version of very high quality made by a Japanese manufacturer whos name escapes me. Fein Multi Masters are expensive, and the pneumatic machine was astranomically expensive, but quality is usually worth the money. For those on a tight budget, the are a number of cheaper brands coming on the market.

Two photos of a Multi Master in use on First Mate
The Multi Master performs a number of tasks using a range of fittings including the triangular sanding pad shown in the photos above, as well as cutting and scraping using several different knife and saw attachments. The use to which I put the machines for the majority of the time is sanding.

What makes a Multi Master (and its copies) so good? Well, most triangular detail sanders work on the orbital principal in the same way as 1/2 sheet and 1/3 sheet orbital sanders. The problem with such an operation is that when you run the sanding pad up against an edge such as in the above photos, the orbital action causes the machine to bounce off the adjacent surface in an annoying and somewhat violent fashion.

However, the Fein Multi Master operates on a different principle. The sanding pad (or saw blade, knife etc) oscillates through an arc of about 1-1/2 degrees in each direction at very high frequency. You will note in the photos that the three sides of the sanding pad are slightly convex, and when you run the pad up against a hard edge, the machine continues to operate smoothly despite being in contact with the adjacent surface. In addition, the sanding action is much more effective than that of an orbital version. Make sure that anything you buy has an oscillating action - not an orbital action.

The metal backing plate to which the foam backing pad and the hook-and-loop is attached. Note the convex sides.

My one complaint is that the sanding discs are expensive, and are held on the pad by a fine hook-and-loop material like Velcro. Because the oscillation frequency is high, and the pad is basically contacting the same place, heat due to friction is not removed by constantly rotating pads, and it is very easy to melt the plastic in the hook-and-loop material. To get around both of these problems, I peel the hook-and-loop off the face of the sanding pad, and use sticky-backed paper placed directly against the dense foam backing on the sanding pad. I cut my own sanding discs by tracing around the machines pad onto 200mm (8 inch) sticky-backed sanding discs which can be bought in bulk from the hardware store at reasonable prices. I cut them out using a utility knife of robust shears, and I think I get about 6 or seven from each 200mm disc.

Occasionally I find that I need a really flat and hard backing for the sanding disc and I have developed a modification which works superbly well. What I do is I peel the factory-supplied dense foam pad off the alloy plate (I keep a number of spares in my workshop) and in its place I glue on a pad of 6mm (1/4") marine plywood which I cut from scrap. Then I simply attach the stick-backed paper in the normal manner. See photos below.

My modified pad, with 6mm (1/4") plywood glued to the alloy plate using contact adhesive
A nice, flat and hard surface to which the sticky-backed sand paper can be applied. The counter-bored hole in the ply is to ensure that the attaching bolt for the alloy plate does not interfere with the sanding surface.
I hand bevelled the edges of the plywood to replicate the shape of the foam pad.
In some future postings, Ill decribe some other tools which are rarely mentioned, but which I find particularly effective.

Howdy Bailey Boatbuilder with a Difference

Howdy Bailey is a long-time friend, from long before we moved to USA. Howdy had bought plans from me for the Pratique 35 and we visited him in Norfolk, Virginia, on our first trip to USA in 1983. I was a young designer, not yet through with my studies at Westlawn School of Yacht Design (now named Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology) and was totally unknown. Yet, based solely on the design that he had bought from me and a few hours chatting over dinner, Howdy Bailey had the confidence in me to commission the design of a 64ft charter yacht that was to be built for a consortium in Norfolk. That design is the Dix 64 and the boat was launched and went into the St Thomas charter trade as "Rising Sun".
Dix 64 "Rising Sun" shows off her exquisite finish.Howdy Bailey in the red shirt.
"Rising Sun" was beautifully built in steel, finished in flag blue Awlgrip that displayed her blemish-free surfaces to perfection. Rigged as a staysail schooner for ease of handling by a small crew, she surprised all who sailed on her with her speed under sail and characteristics.

Over the years and on opposite sides of the Atlantic, Howdy Bailey and I maintained a lasting friendship and worked together on many projects. They included the Echo 38 cruising tug "Echo" and the Little Creek 47 "Flutterby", now owned by Howdys son Dylan Bailey.
"Echo" at home on a backwater of Chesapeake Bay.

Little Creek 47 "Flutterby" waiting to start a Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race
Howdy was instrumental also in me receiving the commission to design "Sabbatical II" as a custom design for a local businessman and friend. Howdy and his very capable crew turned her into a work of art, with beautiful detailing of a complicated boat.
The ketch-rigged "Sabbatical II" sailing in sloop configuration.
I have always thought of "Howdy" as a nickname, maybe short for Howard or some other name. Not so long ago I asked him what his real name is and he replied "Howdy". He was named Howdy at birth. Howdys interesting name carries through to him being one of the most interesting people that I have had the pleasure of knowing in the boating industry. He no longer builds boats and instead works in the marine service industry. He and his small crew take on service work of all types, from rebuilding joinery to rerigging and new plumbing or mechanicals. Whatever you need done to bring your boat back to pristine condition, Howdy and his guys can do it. Custom metalwork is their specialty, able to produce aluminium and stainless items to a very high standard. They are currently completing the keel/engine support structure in steel for the Didi 950 being built in Ohio.

Howdy also has great community spirit. He introduced me to some surfing friends a year or two after we arrived in Virginia Beach and I joined their very informal Iguana Surf Club. Every year this club hosts a fun day on the beach as a fundraiser for the Norfolk-based Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters, with surf contest, fun events and a big party afterwards. The past few years Howdy Bailey has really come through with large amounts of cash that has been donated by his customers and local businesses toward the fundraiser. Howdy has a big heart.

Ever since we met, he has done business from various buildings near to Cobbs Marina at Little Creek, an inlet off the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It was always an interesting place to visit, with all kinds of fascinating bits and pieces hung on the walls or suspended from the roof. Howdy is a collector, not of "stuff" but of "interesting stuff". His workshop just wasnt big enough to display all of his eclectic collection.

City codes have now forced a relocation and Howdy Bailey Yacht Services has moved into a larger shop at 7527 Avenue J, Norfolk. This has much more open space and it has been put to good use to show off Howdys collection of toys, bicycles, boats, signs, classic cars, old tools and a host of other things. The heavy items are on the floor and lighter items are hanging from the roof or along the walls. Heres a concept design prepared for a start-up boat builder in England. The boats were to be built in fiberglass by Halmatic, Ltd. of Hants, England. Two different profiles and arrangements were offered as can be seen in this promotional material. I dont believe the project went beyond this preliminary stage. The year was 1966.

A Personal Commercial Note to My Readers

Dear Readers,

Ive been informed by Amazon that my Amazon Associates account will be terminated after Sunday, October 6, along with the accounts of all other Amazon Associates in Maine. This is Amazons response to a new Maine law which creates nexus for companies that engage in internet affiliate marketing relationships. In other words, the state of Maine will now require Amazon to collect sales tax if it has affiliates here, and Amazons response was discontinue affiliate marketing in the state.

This blog is an Amazon Associate, promoting products on Amazon through the Indigenous Boats Store and through occasional product-specific ads at the bottom on some posts (like this recent post about long voyages in folding kayaks). Im not sure if Amazon plans to take down the Indigenous Boats Store altogether, or simply stop paying referral fees for sales that originate there. But in any case, this source of (very limited) supplemental income is about to disappear for me.

If you had planned any purchases of books on canoes, kayaks, rafts, sampans, umiaks, coracles, or any other subject covered by this blog, please consider doing it through the Indigenous Boats Store before October 7. I will receive a small commission on your purchase, which will be priced the same price as if you went directly to Amazon. Orders and returns are also handled the same way.

FYI: You can also access the Indigenous Boats Store via the advertising band that appears just below this blogs header when viewed in a standard browser. It does not appear in Bloggers mobile version.

Many thanks,
Bob Holtzman, blogger

p.s., For those with an interest in affiliate marketing, heres Amazons letter:
Greetings from the Amazon Associates Program.
Were writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account will be closed and your Amazon Services LLC Associates Program Operating Agreement will be terminated effective October 6, 2013. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional Maine state tax collection legislation passed by the state legislature and signed by Governor LePage on June 5, 2013, with an effective date of October 9, 2013. As a result, we will no longer pay any advertising fees for customers referred to an Amazon Site after October 6, nor will we accept new applications for the Associates Program from Maine residents.
Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned prior to October 7, 2013, will be processed and paid in full in accordance with your regular advertising fee schedule.  Based on your account closure date of October 6, 2013, any final payments will be paid by December 31, 2013.
While we oppose this unconstitutional state legislation, we strongly support the federal Marketplace Fairness Act now pending before Congress. Congressional legislation is the only way to create a simplified, constitutional framework to resolve interstate sales tax issues and it would allow us to re-open our Associates program to Maine residents.
We thank you for being part of the Amazon Associates Program, and look forward to re-opening our program when Congress passes the Marketplace Fairness Act.
 Sincerely,
The Amazon Associates Team
UPDATE, 5 October, 2013: This post was updated to more accurately reflect Maines new tax law. A previous statement here concerning a sales tax on affiliate advertising was incorrect. Thanks to Cate Monroe, CPA, for the clarification.

Buggalow Photos

A couple of posts back, I ran comments from reader and blogger António Fangueiro of Portugal about the dhow type known as the buggalow. According to António, the buggalow shows evidence of European influence both in design and in the quality of workmanship which, he says, is considerably finer than that of most dhows.

António subsequently sent me these photos, taken in Mozambique, I believe. He says they were published in a Portuguese magazine around 1910, and presumes that the photos were taken considerably earlier.

Looking at the foreground vessel in the first photo, Im struck by the crooked mast, the heavy shrouds, the apparently very light yard built up of two sections and lashed about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, and the unusually long luff on the settee sail. The vessel in the left background is another buggalow, without a rig.

I believe the caption of the second photo refers to the buggalows similarity to the Portuguese nao or caravel, a couple examples of which appear below, also courtesy of António. I dont know the original source of these images. (If their owner contacts me, I will gladly provide credit.)

Of course, while there are some similarities, there are also substantial differences between buggalows and caravels, not least being the rig. The dhow rig carries a settee sail, while the caravel carries a lateen. See here for discussion of the difference between these two superficially similar types.

Thanks to António for his input.
